Private-Sector Jobs Rise 90,000 in September, ADP Reports
Private-sector payrolls grew by 90,000 jobs in September, ADP said, as base pay climbed 3.2% and gross pay rose 4.7%.
Private-sector employment expanded by 90,000 jobs in September, according to the ADP National Employment Report released Wednesday, a figure that points to a measured pace of hiring as the labor market continues to cool from its post-pandemic highs.
Base pay for job-stayers rose 3.2% on an annual basis, while gross pay — which captures bonuses, overtime, and other variable compensation — climbed 4.7%, ADP said. The divergence between the two metrics suggests variable compensation components are playing an outsized role in overall wage growth for workers who remained in their positions.

The report is produced by ADP Research in collaboration with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab and draws on payroll data from millions of U.S. workers, giving it broad coverage across industries and firm sizes. A 90,000 gain is notably below the monthly averages recorded in recent years, indicating that employers are exercising greater caution in headcount decisions. Analysts will be watching whether the softening trend is reflected in the Bureau of Labor Statistics nonfarm payrolls release expected later in the week.
